Things to consider when constructing a Pond or Water feature

Lets start at the beginning, the first step to any pond or water feature construction is always crating a plan. While every little detail down to the last fish or plant doesn't have to be down on paper, its a great idea to at least think about (if any) you might want in your water garden, as it will tie in with your Pond or Water feature construction basics.

Things to consider are size, materials, and location of your pond or water feature.

Size

Know what the intended purpose of your garden pond is going to be, this will determine the size of your pond and water feature, a few factors to think of

  • Aesthetic preference e.g. do you want waterfalls, streams or natural stone rockeries added to your pond

  • Available space

  • Will it be big enough habitat if you intend to use it for a fish pond

Depth

The depth of your pond will also depend on what its use will be. If it's going to be used purely as a ornamental water feature feeding waterfalls or streams etc the depth isn't much of a issue, but if you intend to keep fish it is recommended to be at least 90cm in the deepest part to help protect the fish from temperature changes and predators, a shelf can be designed into your pond construction if plants are intended.

Materials

There are quite a few different materials you can build your pond and water features out of, from pre cast fibreglass, rubber liner, concrete to fibre glassed concrete or all natural stone, each with there own pros and cons and very in price.

Location

ponds and water features can be moved but its very money consuming and highly impractical, so getting it's location right when constructing first time is your best bet. A few factors to consider with the location are,

Sunlight

How much sunlight will your pond get, while sunlight is great for your pond and pond plants to much can cause problems, ideal would be sunlight in the morning and shade in the afternoon.

Trees

Over hanging trees will undoubtedly end up dropping there leaves into your pond or water feature, and if not removed will decay and lead to problems with your water and health of you fish, also the roots of any tree that is too close to your pond and water feature can cause big problems with the structure of your pond construction.

Eyesight

If your pond is out of sight generally its out of mind. To ensure you get the maximum enjoyment from your new water garden (and keep it in the best condition) it is generally recommended that it be easily visible from/inside your home and/or your outdoor entertaining area if applicable.
