First of all how do you know if your pond plant needs repotting?
Depending on the type of plant but usually they will need repotting or splitting every one to two seasons. Indications could be if the plant has stopped thriving, it has yellow spots on its leaves or has stopped flowering. roots do often grow outside of the plant basket so this can just need you trim the roots back to the pot.
If your plant does need repotting the things you will need are as follows
Baskets- Larger than your existing basket, or if splitting the pond plant two of the same size.
Aquatic Soil- This is a special soil that contains less nutrients and for use in pond water, it will not effect your water quality or aggravate algae problems.
Basket Liners- Hessian
Aquatic Gravel- Pea sized gravel to keep the soil in place, note if you keep koi in your pond try and keep the top of the basket above the water as they will suck the gravel out to get to the roots.
Pond Plant Fertilizer- When repotting it's a perfect time to give your pond plants a treat.
The perfect time to repot your pond plants is spring/summer when the plant are in full growth.
How to Repot your Marginals and Water Lilies
To make your life easier and the pond plant easier to handle trim them, remove dead flowers and foliage. Submerged plants can be cut down to within about 6 inches of their pots. Remove the plant from its old basket and rinse the roots with pond water, trim the roots if needed. Now line your new basket with the hessian, add some new aquatic soil and fertilizer to the base of the basket so your plant root system sits about a inch below the top of the new basket, add your gravel over the top of the soil to fill the basket.
