Tending to your lawn in the winter

You may not think your lawn needs tending to in the winter and seems pointless, but there are many things that if left may mean your lawn becomes damaged come spring.

Lawn Care Tips For Winter

We have listed some easy winter lawn tips to make sure you have a lush lawn come spring.

  • Try and keep off waterlogged, wet turf/lawn or soil- Our great british weather in the winter is damp to say the least, and a lawn with heavy soil can be waterlogged for months having drainage installed could help, stepping or walking on wet soil will force the air pockets out and becomes compacted, as soil with no air pockets dries out it will dry like concrete, this will prevent roots from growing, grass on compacted soil will wither and thin, and will probably need to be aerated to recover and the soil may take months to recover.

  • Keep the leaves off you lawn- During the winter months leaves will fall from deciduous trees and gather on lawns, if they are not removed will shade out the grass and could kill areas of the lawn completely. You can clear the leaves from your turf with either a rake, mower or blower, putting them over bare soil will act as winter mulch rotting down to improve soil quality and help keep frost of tender plants, or you can just dispose of them in your green bin.

  • Moss Control- Mosses thrive in damp, shady conditions so loves the winter months, if your lawn struggles with moss it may take over completely during the winter, by putting down a moss control treatment in early winter it will help keep it at bay, and if its bad treat again in early spring.

  • Mow your grass if it grows- Its generally not freezing the whole of the winter in the uk, and we do get milder spells, the grow of your grass will depend on the temperature, if your lawn does grow don't be afraid to run a mower over it, but adjust the blades to the highest setting and make sure its dry.

  • Frost and snow- Here in the uk there will be many a frosty morning and some days last all day, you should refrain from walking on it as the leaves of the grass will snap, this damage can show as brown patches over the next few weeks, snow does not need to be cleared as will not damage the grass.

So to sum it up just because your not outside in your garden enjoying the summer sun your grass still needs a little TLC. Just follow our tips to ensure a nice lush lawn to enjoy later in the year. #gcplandscapes
