Things to consider when constructing a pond

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

lets start at the beginning, the first stop to constructing any pond is always creating a plan, while every little detail down to the last fish or plant doesn't have to be down on paper its a great idea to at least think about (if any) you might want in your water garden, as it will tie in with the construction basics.

Things to consider are size, material and location of your garden pond construction.

Size

Know what the intended purpose of your garden pond is going to be, this will determine the size of your pond, a few factors to think of

  • Aesthetic preference

  • Available space

  • Will it be a big enough habitat if you intend to use it for a fish pond

Depth

The depth of your garden pond or water feature will also depend on what its use will be, if its going to be used purely as a ornamental water feature the depth isn't much of a issue, but if you intend to keep fish it is recommended to be at least 90cm in its deepest part to help protect the fish from temperature changes and predators. A shelf can be incorporated into the design if plants are intended. Another thing to consider when thinking about size is waterfalls, streams, fountains, bog gardens and beach areas can be incorporated into your garden pond construction design.

Material

There are a few different materials you can build your pond out of, from pre cast fibre glass, rubber liner, concrete to fibre glassed concrete, each with their own pros and cons and very in price.

Location

Ponds can be moved but its money consuming and highly impractical, so getting its location right the first time is your best bet. a few factors to consider with the location are

Sunlight

How much sunlight will your pond get? While sunlight is great for your pond and plants too much can cause problems, ideal would be sunlight in the morning and shade in the afternoon.

Trees

Over hanging trees will undoubtedly end up dropping their leaves into your pond or water feature and if not removed will decay and lead to problems with your water and health of your fish, also the roots of any trees that are to close to your pond can cause big problems with the structure of your pond.

Eyesight

If your pond is out of sight generally its out of mind, to ensure you get the maximum enjoyment from your new water feature (and keep it in the best condition) it is generally recommended that it be easily visible from inside your home and/or your outdoor entertaining area if applicable.
